COVID-19 CORONAVIRUS CRISIS: Malaga’s provincial government sends total of €15million aid to 88 small municipalities

The Diputación de Málaga has stepped forward with €15 million of financial support for municipalities with less than 20,000 inhabitants and the money will be in their coffers ‘within days’.

The president of the provincial government has given the green light to the Municipal Plan for Economic Assistance 2020, with €15 million euros in the kitty, which will be distributed as unconditional transfers of non-finalist funds. This means that each local entity will be able to dedicate the amount it receives to the causes it deems most necessary for its area.

Francisco Salado, who signed the approval of the plan said that the municipalities can allocate the money ‘to cover their priorities and face the urgent problems that must be addressed.’

For this reason, he added, the aid is intended to ‘provide relief to local treasures at a critical time for all due to the dire circumstances we are experiencing due to the health crisis caused by the COVID-19 coronavirus.’

The president of the Diputación de Málaga also said that the provincial institution is also working on an ambitious plan to stimulate the economies of municipalities once the coronavirus crisis is overcome.

He had detailed how a Whatsapp communication channel has been set up  with all the mayors of the province, so that they communicate their main needs, problems and incidents, as well as the actions they consider to be priorities.

Criteria for the distribution of funds

The 2020 Municipal Economic Assistance Plan is intended for 87 municipalities with less than 20,000 inhabitants and the local autonomous entity Bobadilla-Estación, which together add up to a population of 236,075 people.

The distribution of the funds is made following two criteria. 75 per cent of the plan (€11,250,000 euros) will be distributed equally among the 88 beneficiary entities. And the remaining 25 per cent (€3,750,000 euros) is to be distributed proportionally, depending on the population of each town, with an amount of €17.65174992 euros per inhabitant.

There is a limit on the amount to be received by the three municipalities with more than 10,000 inhabitants (Álora, Manilva and Torrox), which will receive €250,000 euros each.
