Aguardiente is a generic term for alcoholic beverages that contain between 29% and 60% alcohol by volume (ABV). The word is a compound of the words for “water” (agua in Spanish) and “burning”/”fiery” (ardiente in Spanish), similarly to the English term firewater.
Held since 2013, the Aguardiente Festival aims to rescue and promote its artisanal production.
It’s a tradition that dates back to the eighteenth century, when 70% of the municipality was vineyards.
During the fiesta contest is held in which residents of the municipality participate, preparing the licor in the town square with their own stills and in view of all.
Afterwards these liquors are tasted and prizes awarded by a group of experts.
