Spain deploys almost 2,000 troops to fight Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic

Spain’s armed forces have 1,820 troops deployed across the mainland and in the Canary Islands to fight the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic.

The Chief of the Defence staff, General Miguel Angel Villaroya, said the troops were deployed across 28 cities.

Specifically, the Army has 350 troops deployed in the cities of Badajoz and Vigo; the Navy (Marine Corps), has 120 troops in Cádiz (Puerto de Santa María and San Fernando) and the Military Emergency Unit (UME), has displaced 1,350 troops in the following places: Araca-Vitoria, Miranda de Ebro , Zaragoza, Logroño, Haro, Pontevedra, A Coruña, León, Oviedo, Santander, Burgos, Aranjuez, Tarancón, Ocaña, Segovia, Ávila, Toledo, Talavera de la Reina, Mora, La Puebla de Montalbán, Torrijos, Badajoz, Mérida, Jerez de la Frontera, Malaga, Granada, Seville, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Alicante, Valencia and Castellón de la Plana.

They are mainly responsible for carrying out reconnaissance, presence and disinfection tasks in critical infrastructures such as railway stations, buses, port areas, hospitals and health centres, institutional buildings, commercial areas and main roads. They also carry out informative and awareness-raising tasks among the population to avoid crowds.

The Chief of Defence Staff (JEMAD), has also said there will be “presence of military units, elements of the Military Emergency Unit and later the Army in the Madrid suburban stations”, to avoid crowds on the platforms and in the railway facilities.”

In addition, “a request by the Ministry of Health for possible reinforcements of health care in Melilla is being studied,” said Jemad.

The department headed by Minister Margarita Robles has also received a request from the Ministry of the Interior for the disinfection of the control centres of the General Directorate of Traffic in Madrid, Malaga, Valladolid, Valencia, Seville, Coruña and Palma. These tasks will be faced, throughout this day, by both Units of the Military Emergency Unit and the Army.
