It seems an age ago, but the two people most responsible for developing and promoting the Serranía de Ronda as a destination for birdwatchers were Alfredo Carrasco (then of the Centre Serranía de Ronda Tourist Initiatives, CIT) and Peter Jones (now President of the Andalucía Bird Society). Now the Serranía de Ronda is recognised as one of the major birding hotspots in Spain, gaining a reputation globally by an ever-growing number of birders, associations and nature tour operators. With over 250 bird species recorded in the area, it is a must-visit destination for both the travelling and resident birder. The diversity of habitat is responsible for the high diversity of species, not just with birds, but also all fauna and flora. From high limestone peaks to river valleys, from dense woodlands to open areas, the region is unsurpassed for ease of access to stunning scenery and wildlife. The area encompasses 3 major natural and protected spaces La Sierra de las Nieves, Sierra de Grazalema and the largest forest reserve in Europe Los Alcornocales Natural Park. The birds most emblematic for the area are Bonelli’s Eagle, four vulture species, Black Wheatear, Rock Thrush, Thekla Lark, Rock Sparrow, Wryneck, Red-billed Chough and many more. Whatever the time of year, the avifauna will reward time spent in our mountains.
