Cortes de la Frontera

Sandwiched between the Alcornocales natural park and Sierra de Grazalema natural park in the far western reaches of Malaga province is the pueblo blanco (white town) of Cortes de la Frontera. It is in a superb vantage point overlooking the sweeping Guadiaro valley below, with a spectacular backdrop of the Serranía de Ronda mountains. Dominating the landscape around the town are extensive woods of cork trees (alcornocales) that stretch from the Guadiaro river westwards, to where the municipal boundary meets Cadiz province, and beyond. Cork has contributed greatly to the local economy since the late 17th century. Cortes used to be one of the richest pueblos blancos because of cork production and evidence of this wealth can still be seen today in the grand 18th-century mansions lining the main street. Covering over 170km², Cortes is one of the largest municipalities in Malaga province. The town has a population of around 4,500 and is located at 623m.

Malaga province’s spectacular El Caminito del Rey gorge walk has a new landmark: a 110-metre-long suspension footbridge, the longest of its kind in Spain, which is now open to the public. This structure, installed just before the area above the railway bridge and the El Chorro tunnel, creates an alternative route for the final section of the Caminito, making the experience even more spectacular and enhancing visitor safety. It has cost 1.5 million euros and has been covered with own funds generated by the Caminito that must be applied to improvements, as established by the concession fee – currently managed by the UTE Sando, Salzillo Servicios Integrales and Mundo Management. The president of the Diputacíon de Málaga provincial authority, Francisco Salado, and the president of the Junta de Andalucía regional government, Juanma Moreno, inaugurated the footbridge during an event also attended by the mayors of Álora, Antequera and Ardales, Francisco Martínez, Manuel Barón and Juan Alberto Naranjo, respectively, and the mayor of Valle de Abdalajís, Virginia Romero. Diputación invests 3.1m euros to resolve movement of road linking Ronda and villages in the Guadiaro valley

The Diputación de Málaga provincial authority is carrying out a major stabilisation and refurbishment project on the nearly nine-kilometre-long MA-7401 road, which connects Ronda with Benaoján and also provides access to other municipalities in the Guadiaro valley, such as Montejaque, Jimera de Líbar and Cortes de la Frontera. The works, awarded for 3.1 million euros to the joint venture Albaida Infraestructuras, SA, Talleres y Grúas González SL, and Tecnoasfalto Levante SL, focus on resolving serious problems of landslides and road surface deformation and will continue until the beginning of next year. The president of the authority, Francisco Salado, has visited the works along with the mayors of Benaoján and Montejaque and pointed out that this is the largest economic undertaking carried out on a provincial road in recent years. “It is a road,” he added, “that runs through the municipalities of Ronda and Benaoján and has suffered from continuous landslides, so various improvement works were carried out, although they only partially resolved the problems. Provincial authority and Bishopric launch Málaga Sacra plan with restoration of church in Benaoján

The Diputación de Málaga and the Diocese of Malaga have signed an agreement for the conservation and rehabilitation of churches, parishes, hermitages and temples of historical and heritage character in the province, the Málaga Sacra plan, which is has a budget of eight million euros. The president of the Malaga provincial authority Francisco Salado, and the bishop of Malaga, Monsignor José Antonio Satué, have sealed the agreement to launch this plan, which will begin with actions in the church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, in Daimalos, a district of Arenas; and in the church of Our Lady of the Rosary, in Benaoján. Salado stressed that the agreement stems from the Diputación de Málaga’s conviction that religious heritage is not only an important cultural and tourist attraction for the municipalities, but is much more than that. He emphasised its importance because many of the churches declared as Cultural Heritage Sites or included in heritage protection catalogues are in a state of advanced disrepair.
