The Romería in Cortes de la Frontera is an annual cultural and religious pilgrimage celebrating the town’s patron saint, Nuestra Señora del Rosario. It seamlessly blends a sacred procession with a lively countryside fiesta, typically taking place in early June.
The pilgrimage centres around the statue of the Virgin, which is paraded from the town out into the surrounding countryside. Expect a vibrant atmosphere featuring horseback riders, decorated carts, the traditional coro (choir), communal outdoor dining, live bands, and DJs.
The afternoon camp often hosts traditional Andalusian contests, including ‘carrera de cintas’ (ribbon races on horseback), children’s games, and the ‘concurso de garrocha’ (horsemanship and cattle-pole events).
Locals dress in traditional Andalusian attire, with women wearing ‘trajes de flamenca’ costumes and men donning classic short riding jackets and wide-brimmed hats.
