No, Marks and Spencer are not opening a branch in the capital of the Serranía. Nor is the Málaga brewery San Miguel opening a factory here. Instead, St Michael, aka artist Oscar San Miguel, known as Okuda, has gifted three murals to the City of Dreams in 2021. Paul Whitelock investigates…
Have you noticed the new murals that have appeared around Ronda this year?
The first two are side by side on two apartment blocks near the current bus station. They appeared in May and represent two flamenco dancers and a celebration of Andalucía.
Within the last week or so, another one has appeared at the junction of Calle Granada and Avenida de Málaga. This 13-metre-high work depicts a modern version of the Mona Lisa by Italian artist Leonardo Da Vinci.
These three murals are the work of Santander street artist Okuda, aka Oscar San Miguel. Spain’s equivalent of Banksy.
In addition, there appeared at the north-east entrance to Ronda on Avenida de la Legión the one that is my favourite.
This was devised and painted by rondeño Víctor Fernández and represents his overview of the Ciudad Sonada, the City of Dreams. It features major landmarks in Ronda, including El Puente Nuevo, La Colegiata de Santa María, La Puerta de Almocábar and Los Ocho Caños.
There is, of course, a tiled mural that has been around for a few years. Located at the southern end of the Puente Nuevo opposite Calle Tenorio, it is a stylized aerial view of the city.
