Orange weather alerts activated for snow in the Granada, Almeria and Jaen provinces of Andalucia

Spain’s State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has activated orange weather warnings for snowfall in areas of Granada, Almería and Jaén between midday on Sunday and midnight on Monday, according to information from 112 Andalucia – the emergency services’ coordination centre.

In the Granada regions of Guadix and Baza a snow accumulation of up to 15 centimetres could fall in 24 hours and in the areas of ​​Nacimiento and Campo de Tabernas (Almería) too.

In Cazorla and Segura (Jaén) up to 20 centimetres of snow could accumulate in the same period.

AEMET has also activated yellow warnings for falls of between 2 and 5 centimetres of snow in other regions of the Almeria, Granada and Jaen provinces; This is the case in Capital and Montes (Jaén), Nacimiento and Campo de Tabernas (Almería) and in the Granada areas of Cuenca del Genil, Nevada and Alpujarras.

Also, in Almeria and Granada, there are yellow alerts for wind speeds of up to 70 km/h; in Guadix and Baza (Granada), Levante, Nacimiento and Campo de Tabernas and Valle del Almanzora and Los Vélez (Almería).

It is advisable to disconnect all electrical appliances that are not necessary when it is snowing, as well as keep the stopcocks open to prevent water from freezing in the pipes.

If possible, it is best to remain at home, especially children and the elderly; if you have to go outside, it is better to wear several thin layers of warm clothes.

If you have to drive, check information about the state of the roads.

It is recommended to drive with a full tank of fuel, keep the exhaust pipe clear of snow, check the brakes, tyres, lights, antifreeze and carry snow chains.

After a snowfall, drive with the utmost caution, do not brake in wet areas, or make sudden changes in the direction.

Drivers should keep in mind that if snow fall prevents you completing your journey away from a town it is advisable to remain inside the vehicle; if you keep the engine running with the heating on, you must avoid falling asleep and always leave the window open a little to renew the air and avoid possiblity of gas poisoning.
