Montejaque

Every year the villagers of Montejaque recreate “The Battle of the Bridge” in which 200 locals defeated 700 French soldiers, the victory was forged on the bridge of the river Gaduares during the War of Independence in 1810.

On the orders of Jose de Aguilar, neighbours from Montejaque, Atajate, Benaoján, Cortes de la Frontera and Jimera de Líbar, managed to expel the French. The army succumbed to blacksmiths, farmers, bakers, seamstresses, chestnut farmers etc.
